Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Book Endings that Left My Mouth Hanging Open

When I first saw the prompt from this week's Top Ten meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, I thought 'huh, I can't think of that many.'  And then I started listing off book after book so apparently I was just totally wrong.

Since the focus this week is on the ending, I'm not going to talk about these a lot, but mindblowing endings kill me!  And I love them.  It's a conundrum.

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling - The veil.  Oh Lord, the veil. I had nightmares about that.
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling - Avada Kedavra take two.
3. Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead - I still haven't gotten over this one, and the six month wait to the next book made me want to build a time machine.
4. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - That last line of narrative.  Just - dude.
5. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - It's never fun to realise at 4am that you have to wait until August to find out what happens.
6. The Giver by Lois Lowry - I still haven't read the sequels.  They don't exist.  Therefore the ending is all Schrodinger's Cat.
7. The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien - this probably doesn't really count since Lord of the Rings is technically one big book, but when I first read them, I was on a plane and didn't have Return of the King with me!  It was terrible!
8. Every Morganville Vampire book ever by Rachel Caine - I swear, I read way more of these than I really wanted to because the endings made me have to know what came next!
9. The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan - Son of Neptune is coming out today!  I'm so excited!  I keep telling myself no new books, but I can't get a hold on it at the library so I may have to.
10. Deadline by Mira Grant - This one absolutely screwed with my head.  And then I started wondering if I could become BFFs with the author so I could read Blackout before anyone else.  But I realised that was slightly creepy so...

Okay, and this one isn't a book, but it's possibly the worst cliffhanger ever.  The last episode of Angel.  Holy crap, forever unresolved cliffhanger!  And no, the comics don't count.

What endings are on all of your lists?  Link me up so I can visit!

  1. Great use of Schrodinger's Cat! I have been told not to read any of the follow-on books...still have to read The Giver!

  2. Harry Potter- of course! Those titles were not on my top ten list-- why ever not?!? I like how you wrote that the mind-blowing endings are killer, yet we love them. That's how a lot of us feel, I think!

  3. Nice to see a couple of HP novels on your list. Personally, the ending of book 3 blew my mind. That's when the series went to a whole new level for me.

  4. Very true about Catching Fire! Luckily I didn't start the Hunger Games series until Mockingjay was already published! Great blog! :) New follower!

  5. The last few pages of Bloodlines were stellar. I can't wait for the next one. And the endings of Order and the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince were both so shocking and sad.

  7. Catching Fire is the only book on your list that I've finished! I've been meaning to read the Morganville vampire books though! Sounds like I'll need to make sure I always have the next book
